Personal Protection & Safety
The personal protection of our employees is of the utmost importance to SNC-Lavalin PAE Inc. The protection offered to our employees whilst in theatre comes on 3 levels:
  • Protection of the Camp. The men and women of the Canadian Forces provide the physical security at the Kandahar airfield. The perimeter of the camp is surrounded by gravel and HESCO walls (much like a latter-day castle). Located around the camp are Observation Posts and Guard Towers. The main gate into the camp is manned 24 hours a day and controls the access into the camp of all personnel (military or civilian). Lastly, the very latest in surveillance equipment is deployed around the camp to enhance the ability to watch over the camp and the surrounding area.

  • Physical Personal Protection. During Pre-Deployment Training instruction is given on action to be taken during an Alert. These actions will be re-enforced through further briefings on arrival at Kandahar. Regular drills are also conducted to ensure that all personnel know how to react accordingly during an Alert. In the case of company employees, this basically involves taking cover in concrete bunkers (which have been fully tested to ensure that they offer the correct level of protection).

  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). The PPE consists of a fragmentation vest with a ballistic plate and a Kevlar helmet. All employees are fitted for this equipment during Pre-Deployment Training and shown how to wear it correctly; the details are sent to theatre to ensure that the correctly sized PPE is available when personnel arrive. On arrival at Kandahar, all personnel are instructed as to when and where to carry/ wear their PPE.

Work Site Safety Equipment: Safety is our number one concern in Kandahar. All company staff must attend safety meetings and wear safety equipment for all work related activities. The type of work dictates the type of safety equipment given to the staff member. All safety equipment required will be issued, so that safe working practices will be achieved.
We have an excellent work safety record and you will be expected to contribute towards maintaining this result.

Security on the Camp: Kandahar can be a dangerous place and we insist on all of our employees fully complying with the military rules and drills on security. If the security situation in the camp should deteriorate, PPE will be worn and personnel will proceed to bunkers, if required (the picture above shows employees taking shelter in a bunker during an "alert" practice).
In addition, the company carries out regular practices for our internal incident reaction drills and security policies.
